Fire Island Gate, New York

Status: Completed in 2007 Program: Residential Landscape Square Feet: 50sf Location: New York

A gate and front deck was designed for an existing summer house in a resort community on Fire Island, NY. Owning to its function, the gate is always a transitional space, not occupied (one always moves through a gate). The fluid form of the design underlines this quality. The form starts from the ground as a box to accommodate garbage cans. It slightly bends towards the property to encourage entrance, and at the same time it ascends in elevation and cantilevers over the door. To create a light and transparent form, the gate is made out of wood louvers. Photo by Seth Boyd
