Urban Canopy

Status: Research Initiative Program: Temporary Scaffolding Structure and Public Furniture Location:New York, NY

With the fall of a piece of debris from a building in 1980 and the collapse of a back fa├žade of a building in 1998, scaffolding have become an essential element in New York City's urban fabric impacting our everyday experience of sidewalks. As a result, temporary structures are a permanent presence in the city. This research project provides a new way of thinking about scaffolding: one that goes beyond public safety and enriches our experience and use of public space.
